James D. Murtha is the Managing Member of the MURTHA LAW FIRM LLC, and heads the firm’s Landlord-Tenant Law, Debt-Collection Defense and Article 78 divisions.
Having successfully represented countless landlords and tenants in the landlord-tenant courts of Nassau and Suffolk counties, Mr. Murtha’s reputation as an experienced landlord-tenant attorney is well known; and his expertise and depth of knowledge in landlord-tenant law make him highly sought by both landlords and tenants on Long Island.
Having also been a member of the consumer credit industry for over twenty-five years, and having held key positions in several of the nation’s leading debt-collection firms, Mr. Murtha is also a highly experienced debt-collection defense attorney. With expertise in FDCPA, FCRA and HIPAA issues, Mr. Murtha has written and taught on the subjects and has successfully litigated cases in defense of consumers’ rights, protecting them from the unfair practices of debt-collection agencies, creditors, automobile dealerships, banks, student loan companies and other businesses in both state and federal courts.
James D. Murtha also specializes in bringing special proceedings under Article 78 of the Civil Practice Law and Rules in New York State Supreme Court and Second Amendment litigation in defense of the rights of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, and against civil and criminal charges stemming from lawful firearms ownership and use, as well as litigation in defense of licensed firearms dealers in civil liability matters. He is the author of the informational pamphlet, “Understanding Special Proceedings Under Article 78 of the Civil Practice Law and Rules” (2009).
In addition to his duties as Managing Member of the MURTHA LAW FIRM, LLC, Mr. Murtha has also devoted his time to teaching consumer debt classes and providing consumer education as a public service in association with the public library system of Suffolk County.
James D. Murtha earned his Juris Doctor degree at Hofstra University School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in all the courts of the State of New York and in the United States District Court for both the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
